THE WONDERING JEW

Another Mixed Bag

It is late and I am tired. Things go along as they have been going and seem to be set to continue.

Just a few headlines. "Army Secretary Denies Chicanery," Thomas White was an executive in an Enron Subsidiary and says in refined words that he didn't know that sort of thing was going on. "Bush's war on Americans," a box in that article says, "A spokesman for the Justice Department, says the president can designate anyone an enemy combatant -- American or not, here or abroad." The article goes into this deeply, it was written by Robyn Blumner of the St. Petersburg Times. "Security is displacing sanity," by Balint Vazonyi of the Scripps Howard News Service. The last paragraph of that article is very pointed, "It was in a grand Rapids courthouse that I experienced the magical, once in a lifetime moment of becoming a U.S. citizen. That was in 1964. Just then, the country was engaged in making sure we treat all Americans the same. Who would have thought that we would end up treating ordinary Americans as the enemy ?"

Apparently, unless they have been released tonight, there are two Americans being held incommunicado - because Mr. Bush says it shall be so and of course he seems to lead the pack. There seems to be a little resistance to the spying thing, the government oversight on uniform drivers licenses (making them internal passports), in the House but apparently the Senate is willing to go full bore on granting the presidents fondest wishes. Enough for tonight, yet.

Can't help thinking about the 7 years of drought starting in 1931, the collapse of the stockmarket in 1929 and government actions during that era. It took a genius to guide the country through the muck and mire. We were J. Edgar Hoovered I think and he of course could do no wrong. The treatment of the hungry Veterans protesting at Anacostia by our military instigated by Hoobert Heever (That was before he became president, secretary of the Army ?) was shameful as well as many other instances too numerous to mention. And from what I have read he was willing to let things continue as they were before he was replace by FDR.

Then the miserable state of corporation affairs now seems to be laid bare by those turning over rocks. Back to the time of the Robber Barons - deja vu. So, we as a populace are apparently holding a Mixed Bag . . . . . . . .
