2001-04-15 - 09:12 M DST THE WONDERING JEW Returns To my mind and spirit on this Easter Sunday, after the departure of my Eugene daughter and her family -- the reality of the world brings me to earth. Israelis and Palestinians are bombing each other, apparently the hostilities are in escalation there. In the Holy Land, holy to both Christians, Israelis, and Muslims. Unbelievable to me ! Bloodshed, torn bodies, crippled or slain children. It seems more than odd that after all these centuries people in that area haven't figured out that peace is more productive and secure for all than any war could ever be. There is an Associated Press article in this morning's paper. Something that most people can't hear about without a feeling of nauseating revulsion. A filthy ship floating from port to port in Africa with scores of children destined for slavery. Who knows for sure at this moment ? The article goes on to say, "Despite international efforts, child trafficking remains a serious problem in West and Central Africa." The article goes on to say, "Aid workers say desperately poor parents in Benin, Mali, Togo and other countries give up their children for as little as fourteen dollars to smuggling rings that promise to educate them and find them jobs. Boys are then typically resold to cocoa and cotton plantations for as much as three hundred and forty dollars in countries such as Gabon and Ivory Coast. Girls often end up as domestic workers. Conditions are harsh. The children -- some younger than ten years old -- work up to twelve hours a day, are paid little or no money and are rarely heard from by their parents again, aid workers say." This seems incestuously cannibalistic to me. A populace eating itself. This is one thing that they can not blame on us Ugly Americans. The slave trade goes on, much as it did for centuries before, but not to supply workers for the cane plantations and cotton fields in the United states. And the movers and shakers of the world turn a deaf ear and blind eye on people who have no power, no strength and no family or tribe to back them up. In fact they have been sold and whatever the social structure in that tribe or group is they do nothing to stop it. Cases of slavery exist the world over, even here in our country it comes to light now and then, Lord only knows what is under cover. A day to celebrate a Resurrection -- a time for celebrating Passover and I think that the Muslims have holidays they celebrate around this time of year too. The horrendous evil always Returns . . . . . 0 comments so far
