ONE HUNDRED

Today there were one hundred bag pipers on the march at Crown Hill, starting off the festivities of a hundredth anniversary of Olinger's Cemetery and Mortuary.

Crown Hill is truly a crown topping the metro area. From the west side, over the lake one can get a fantastic view of our mountains. The grounds are and to my knowledge always have been immaculate. (except for the geese) The old section has tombstones high of a variety of styles, many of them works of art. The newer sections have the flat plates of metal or stone, which does make maintenance easier, but the shrubs and trees of the old part make a true park of the place.

The main entrance is an esplanade, a dual avenue with an island between, along which are long staffs with flags hanging in the breeze. Roundabouts at intersections. The esplanade goes almost the full length of the place, ending at the Tower of Memories which can be seen from many spots in town.

The pipers marched from the entrance to the tower, playing their pipes all the way. And there was a band concert there by the tower.

I guess that the carnation growing industry began out here that same year as there also are celebrations and parades in connection with carnations.

So, Heather and I don't have to go far afield to delve in the mystery of history, much of which happened here not too long before we were born.

It is truly a good round number this ONE HUNDRED . . . . . . . . . .
