Feb. 10, 2007 - 19:37 MST SO SOON IT STARTS After heaving a sigh of relief that finally we have a Democrat for governor, a revolting development in his reign comes up. He vetoed a bill favoring union membership. Quoting from The Rocky Mountain News article of today, in part: " House Bill 1072 repealed a core piece of the Colorado Labor Peace Act; a second, secret-ballot supermajority election required to form an all-union shop, all employees are required to pay union dues whether or not they join." That's the gist of it. If a union company hasn't held a successful second secret ballot and has a super majority vote for it, then a person can work for a company, not join the union, pay no dues but enjoy each and every benefit that the union fights for, including being defended by union stewards in a grievance procedure. Along with that there is a rumble that the biggies are going to once again push for "right to work" laws in this state. Right to work in a working man's eyes is "right to work for whatever wages the company wants to pay in order to work under the company set conditions." I don't know, it seems that union membership in our country is in the single digits now, or close to it. The pressure of big money shall always be there to cut back on wages, hours, working conditions, et al. Jeepers though, the Gov. hasn't even got the seat in his office warm before he does something like this, after indicating to labor that he was in favor of such a bill. Gloom and doom in this house tonight. Betrayal, SO SOON IT STARTS . . . . . . . . . . . 3 comments so far
