GOOD THINGS HAPPEN HERE

Would that they happen here more often. However, I do hope things don't happen in cases like this that a "good thing" needs to happen. It's worth talking about though I think, especially about the main folks mentioned in the article. The article in todays Rocky Mountain News by Bianca Prieto of that paper is quoted in part herein:

INFANT SAVED FROM PLUNGE

Baby crawls through rail of third-story balcony, falls into woman's arms

"Mary Bussey and her son Brandon were on their way to a little league football game at around noon Saturday when they came upon the unimaginable":

"A crying 8-month-old baby dangling off a balcony three stories above a cement sidewalk, hanging by one hand."

"I thought someone was on the other side of the railing holding on to her," Mary Bussey said of first seeing the baby. "I thought, "What a rotten trick."

"As she got closer, though she saw it was the baby girl's tiny fist cllinging to the railing. The girl cried louder as her small hand began to slip."

"Somehow the infant managed to hang on just long enought for Bussey to postition herself underneath the baby. An instant later, Bussey caught the little girl as she tumbled from the balcony."

"I just got right underneath her," Bussey said, putting her arms out in front of her like catching a football. "Then, boom ! She landed right in my arms."

"While his mother was readying herself to catch the child, 13-year old Brandon ran desperately up two flights of stairs in an effort to get to the girl before she dropped."

"Just as he rounded the corner to start up the second set of stairs, he saw the baby land, uninjured, in his mother's waiting arms."

"I was just hoping she caught her," said Brandon."

"Brandon had first spotted the crying child while he was on his way to take out the trash before his football game."

"Looking up, he saw the child sitting with her lega on either side of the railing, her feet dangling over the ledge."

"Brandon thought she was with an adult, he said, but when he turned to meet his mom at their car, he looked up again and saw the child was about to fall."

"That's when the two sprang into action."

"It's amazing ! A minute earlier earlier or later and we would have missed her, " Bussey said. "I'm not a hero, I'm a mom. If something happened to my kid, I hope someone would help him out."

That's the meat of this remarkable event. An observant boy and his mother, both who in a split second, automatically, did exactly the right thing. People who did not hesitate, nor consider the consequences if the attempt to save the baby was unsuccessful or only partially successful and the possible lawsuits and so forth.

A strong Mom, and a well coordinated one to boot was on hand and responded better than most folks would or could I think.

In the article it mentioned the circumstances surrounding the event. Quote -- "According to the police, the infant's 17-year-old mother had left the child in the care of her 13-and 10-year-old brothers while she went to work. The baby's grandfather, who also lives in the condo, was not home at the time. The boys left their third-floor condo and did not close the front door, police said. The baby managed to crawl out the door and onto the balcony." Unquote.

Also mentiond in the article was the activity by the Department of Human Social Services, which seems to be logical and proper to me.

But what worries me is, what kind of future does this girl baby have ? A 17-year-old mother who has to work, 13 and 10-year-old brothers who haven't been taught well enough to watch and tend a baby girl, who left the condo and didn't even close the door. And why wasn't the grandfather on deck to take care of the baby ? And of course, with a 17-year-old mother -- where is the father of the baby, or is that too much to ask this day and age ?

And if the Department of Human Social Services takes the baby, where will it be placed ? What will it be told about its birth family ? And will the baby be placed with anyone more responsible than the birth mother ?

It is with joy and happiness that I celebrate the selfless and rapid response of the mother who caught the baby, saving it from death or very serious injury, she and her son have been commended, according to what the article said. And they should be, as well.

The big picture is what worries me, how the baby will fare through her life, will she be loved and have the tender care that a baby needs from now on ?

Although these days commendable actions do occur, yet it is headlines when GOOD THINGS HAPPEN HERE . . . . . . . . . . . .
