Sept. 28, 2006 - 23:17 MDT COMES TO US It always is that I can see the things wrong that need fixing, usually - - in fact most of the time I can see no solution. But, oh do we need a solution in this matter. Columbine revisited, and in our state once again in a small near mountain town. This time although there were fewer victims, those girls living will have to cope with the horror of being sexually abused during the standoff. And it is not just the women who were abused, but their male classmates who were unable to help them who will also live with the misery they know their girl classmates went through. And the parents who had to suffer the surreality of the events. Perhaps there is a solution other than having only one entry to a schoolhouse, supplies and necessities being brought in at night, and a somewhat tightened security line much like at airports handling incoming and outgoing students during the day. Pupils and teachers showing passcards to live, alert, aware, dedicated people before backpacks and etc pass through the x-ray machine. Only one way in and one way out. EXCEPT exits electrically and mechanically controlled from the inside in case of fire. Sounds totally Draconian, but it would work until some better way of making sure young people get their education in peace. Along with that some way of dealing with disruptive students should be addressed. Perhaps putting them in an entirely different school and making sure they stay in class. Of course, being dealt with in this manner all sports would have to be cancelled, stadiums bulldozed and other extracurricular activities cancelled. Going to the old method of just plain 3Rs being taught. But I wonder what psychological effect a method like this would have on young people ? ? ? ? Columbine was such a nightmare for us all and it seems that something like this is slated to happen again and again if something is not done to deal with it effectively. The problem is ours and need for our action COMES TO US . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 comments so far
