Jun. 07, 2006 - 23:02 MDT PROGRESS ? There are oceans of motions, crops of photo ops, a sangwige of language, but I wonder how much real progress is afoot on the immigration policy ? There is a short article from the Associated Press in this morning's Rocky Mountain News that gives me that kind of idea. Herein quoted in full: BUSH TOUTS IMMIGRATION PROGRESS ARTESIA, N.M. -- "President Bush declared progress Tuesday in tightening the nation's southern border and pushing major immigration changes through Congress despite widespread skepticism that lawmakers can find a compromise." "The president brushed aside bitter divisions over the issue saying the fact that there is active debate is cause for optimisim." "I know when you watch your television or listen to the radio, it seems like there's nothing but disagreeement on immigration policy in Washington," Bush said, a blazing sun beating down on him and the barn behind him used to simulatearmed encounters in Border Patrol training exercises." "Yet there's growing consensus among all parties and all regions of the country that fundamental reforms are needed," he said." "Bush spoke after watching trainees role-play ways to protect the border against illegal crossings -- boarding buses to check IDs, aiming pretend guns at a vehicle under suspicion, interviewing car occupants at checkpoints and scouring freight cars." ++++++++ His wizard of Oz'ry, hoping to get us in the mood to ignore the vast differences in thought in Congress, keeps telling us to "Never mind the action, pay attention to what I want you to think and feel. All along he has made claims of advances in various things, but what is going on, would you call it PROGRESS ? . . . . . . . . . 0 comments so far
