soon we will be telling ladies that they have our eternal love, on a day called, "st. valentines day." who st. valentine was and his linkup with romance and deep love has been wobbled and bobbled back and forth for ages. every explantion advanced has met with sharp denunciation.

we have mother's day, father's day, grandparent's day, children's day, days stretching into infinity. some where in the dim past i suppose some politically correct blue nose hung the poor saint's name on that day to keep the heathen from calling it lover's day or name from the ancients with a very different interpretation. so st. valentine carries the burden of being the saint of love, wonder how he is holding up ?

in recent years proof of love is a costly gift purchased for the loved one. some times more money is spent on that than on her birthday, every year the price of good long stemmed roses goes astronomicall. of course there other gifts, a heart shaped gold locket with a diamond inset or some other jewelry, prices are way up there too.

my thoughts are that a valentine's gift, no matter how expensive and prettily wrapped has no real meaning unless there is a track record of love given without expectation for some material thing of some kind or other. i think a love not proven and demonstrated constantly or a love too possesive and jealous, lends no luster to a fancy gift. respectful, courteous, caring love can and will accept what ever gift is tendered to her with love and gratitude. o. henrys beautiful story of the watch and combs, where in the girl goes out and sells her long hair for the money to buy a watch for him and he buys her a fabulous set of combs for her beautiful long hair. i know in our family there have been similar acts of love and know of other lovers who have done self sacrificing thing out love for the wife or girl friend.

to shorten a long harangue, gifts don't mean a lot unless true, heart to heart love is there to begin with. we had some lean years when the gifts were home made, treasured because of the time and loving effort expended on them.

did you ever notice that in most cases love truly given is returned in multliples of ten. it keeps working for me and has for many years.
