Feb. 20, 2005 - 20:07 MST THE WONDERING JEW For The Iron Horse Reading a long article in this morning's JOA "The Denver Post" which is part of The Rocky Mountain News. It is an article by Matthew L. Wald of the New York Times. Titled: Amtrak board not on track In essence it says that Bush is planning to eliminate federal aid to Amtrak. The board of directors appointed by Mr. Bush are doing the hangdog, hangfire bit and did not submit a budget request to Congress by the dead line. And along with that The Transportation Department is not helping a bit. We do still have a rail system and its attendant infrastructure in our country, but with Mr. Bush's plan to do in Amtrak we probably will end up with a commuter train system along the East Coast, but no passenger trains running through our country. (Unless there are big fares and ridership) In the dim recesses of my mind I seem to have heard that Amtrak was put into being to provide cheap transportation for the citizenry of our country who couldn't afford the cost of other means of cross country travel, hotel, motel and so forth costs. Didn't think it was supposed to be a money maker, but a subsidy. And now Mr. Bush and his cohorts want to cut Amtrak off - period. If somebody or somebodies don't do something quick there will be no oats For The Iron Horse . . . . . . . . . 0 comments so far
