THE WONDERING JEW

Luverly

Lip deep in rearranging the rearrangement in our shed, taking the heavy stuff from the top shelves and putting the heavies on the bottom, which entailed of course finding a place to stack the light stuff first. Lip deep and praying that no one in passing makes waves.

Naturally some of our dearly loved possessions had to be transferred to storage on the garage shelves, and some from there to the shed, what of that which didn't have to move from the house to either of both places. And of course some from each place going in another direction. Now I lost my way somewhere and don't know if we did something intelligent or just indulged in an exercise in futility.

After consumption of my share of a Little Ceasar's generous sized pizza, milk and a couple of Darvocet and along with that, promising myself to not let the kids know how all that was accomplised I sat down to my keyboard to dream a bit about an ideal society in our U.S.of A.

Somehow in my "Poor Partisan" brain it seems to me that our beloved ancestors (those in the "Colonies" who broke loose from another George by the way) Were just a little better off than the average bear. Seems they didn't trust us hoi of the polloi.

Among other things they put between us common poor folk and real government was the dadblame Electoral College. In some ways it does work, in its own screwed up way. Being the only game in town, us cowboys have no choice but to go along with the myth (poor folk not to be trusted to think, that is) and pogy up to the table and ante to get in the game, not knowing if our dollar is worth a dime or a penny -- it just gets us in to cast a vote, for what that is worth.

Not knowing a damn thing I am talking about makes me an armchair expert, doesn't it ?

If, and that is a big darn IF, things would work out just right we wouldn't need the electoral college and the system where a state is obligated to throw all the votes to the whing ding winner, regardess. But all states would have to be in the same game. We could actually go to the "One Man, One Vote," system. After all every man has a right to have his say, even at the polls. But the way it has been working, what some of us say has been ignored from the early start of our country.

If this wild idea would work, then perhaps our senators and representatives would have to actually take care of their constituents. Thinking about that too, maybe lobbying should be outlawed too ?

Congress is supposed to be for the people, not the corporations or special interest groups. Supposed to be for the welfare of our country as a whole while seeing that their state gets a fair shake. They should see that common sense equitable treatment is rendered to every voter.

Sure, I know that poor old Utah, Nevada and New Mexico won't get as many tax dollars thrown their way, but after all there just aren't that many people there is there ? But they do deserve the honor of being treated as citizens who should get what they actually need from our government. Not the usual "pork barrel" benefits that lobbyists and cash hounds pull for, which is often not really such a good thing for the country as a whole, but what they need and deserve.

Then in this ideal land that I am dreaming about, perhaps there should be a change made in our Supreme Court. In the present day, it seems, that any judge who makes an unpopular (to many varieties of groups) decision is called an "activist judge," of course the judges are picked for their political philosophies to begin with. Some of them are even ethical, in fact I suppose they all are. It just seems to me that the definition of ethics is interpreted in weird ways.

After a breaking in period in which we might get our heads on straight and quit dreaming about governmental windfalls and tax breaks we could begin to live a life like something Bonnie put in her entry the other day. I e-mailed her and asked who the author was. Seems like it was good old An Nonny Muss, the ancient Chinese philosopher. It goes like this:

Resolve to be tender to the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant with the weak and wrong. ----------------------- Sometime in our life you will have been ALL of these. ------------------------ So this wonderer, ponderer and wanderer amongst the detritus of a political world where the only real compassion is shown by lip service and that alone. Just a sound bite on the way.

It would be so great if things were ideal, but we blew it in Eden. How I long for the miracle of a peaceful world. Wouldn't it be Luverly . . . . . . . . .
