Hart Before The Course

It seems that we and the media and maybe even the super egg-headed experts are heading pell mell down the path to what they think will be accomplished. This Human Genome thing, no doubt there have been miracles accomplished in this gathering of knowledge. But when the smoke dies down, who will be the first person, or group that in the effort to do good will cause disastrous things to happen.

This old memory is faulty, and there are a few things maybe I remember, the Killer Bees, the Africanized ones, weren't they imported to solve some damned problem or other ? I don't think that the Water Hyacinth is native to American waters - imported I think in some misguided effort to solve some problem by choking the estuaries here. There have been many supposed new and shiny proposals which made the over all situation of the country much worse off than before.

Heck, we haven't come to even a slowing down of the pendulum swing of mechanization plus mass production plus pollution yet. And still is present the problem of urban overcrowding.

How on earth can we go into the Human Genome thing and expect something rational to happen ? Something that won't create Frankenstein's Monsters in the future ?

The scientists have developed theories of evolution, refinements of Darwin's ideas. Which in my feeble little mind are seminal and definitive. But the big boys are still guessing in a way just like our cave man ancestors did about that brilliant, round giver of light in the sky. Everybody wants to get into the act and spout words of wisdom and be credited with achieving great progress for mankind. They say that evolution exists, but they can't state the mechanisms, exactly that let evolution be possible.

I am classed as a traitor by all schools of thought. I feel that the causes of evolution have pretty well been discovered, but - - - what is behind this ? Could a higher power have built the mechanism enabling cratures to evolve at need ? My shouted down theory is that the Higher Power, designed everything, started it in motion, put the beginnings of mankind on the earth. Gave a few simple definite instructions to Man and passed on the marvelous and awesome ability think and exercise free will. And then felt that we were on our own after saving our butts by the deluge, destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

I digress maybe. The Human Genome bit, are we trying to make the attempt to take over the problems of our maker ? Oh man, there are schools of thought that we are predestined to walk one certain path through lifes course and that regardless how hard we try we can't change one iota of our destiny.

I just wonder how the new and fascinating DNA factory will insure that morals and ethics will be followed through out the course of future history.

I deeply love my fellow man, but also I have observed his faults and failings (which I am subject to), his greedy attempt to be the supreme leader of the world as so many of his predecessors busted their buttons striving to do. Trying to make something be true by telling lies and exaggerating, even if it was not possible.

My concern is for the generations ahead of us - - the possible two headed, three legged, designer geniuses of the future - - - will any of them be descendants of mine ? Will they have happiness to degree that we do . . . . or will the possible fear of being consigned to the junk heap as obsolete . . . . or worse yet the yoked oxen serving the latest, hot off the line, new and improved model fresh out of the Genomery ? Damnfino ! But I do wonder if someone will appear similar to Edison, Einstein and others, geniuses but willing to weigh, think, examine and cogitate long enough to save us from disappearing into our own belly buttons. I am not Chicken Little, just wondering what the vagaries of life will bring in the future. Oh, well . . . . . only time and the historians will come up with a weird story of WTFTW ? ? ? ? ? ?
