2000-04-30 - 23:32:15 April 30. 2000 Wail At The Wall In my opinion, one who says someone is from the wrong side of the tracks, shows the utter bigotry in their makeup. There is no wrong side, only foolish and snobbish attitudes. >Many of our great people came from what is called the wrong side of the tracks and made their way to the top echelon of society. There are neighborhoods which are populated with poor people living in unsatisfactory housing. The young people there can rise above poverty if they so desire. Many immigrants new to this country, with no grasp of the English language, unskilled in the things needed here, have made their way to responsible vocations, prestigeoous and well to do by their own efforts. It is easy to blame the environment, schooling, parenting and poverty. Many of the aforementioned went through crushing, suffocating poverty and still, as adults new to this country made their way to peace, ease and income sufficient tot provide these things. Much of this I think comes from the inner drive and desire to rise from the depths, the overpowering push to proceed on a profitable path. Having family to foster this is a big help of course. Many immigrants to America, to their dying day, could not speak English insisting though that their children go to school, learn English to perfection, make good grades and proceed into a productive and prosperous life. So. their progeny did exactly that. In spite of the lack of familly support one can choose to live the life of the heroes protrayed by Horatio Alger's "Rags to Riches Boys." It has been done time and time again. Some chose the route of education and research, took low paying positions as part of the game they wished to play. Some chose to educate themselves to thrive in the world of business. While a few chose careers of sacrifice to betteer the plight of mankind. Others chose different paths in order to live doing lifelong, the things they wanted to do. Sad is the story of a person who has done nothing, learned nothing, taught nothing and gave even less . . . . . they find a lonely grave. - - - - I still feel that way, G'night 0 comments so far
